 Origins

Etymology

The word Akibakei is a japanese slang term which means Akihabara style which is based off of the city of Akihabara,Tokyo Japan. The term came into popularity in the 1980's and use to refer to the Akibakei of the time which derived from Otaku urban culture.

 Movements

Geek Movement (1934-current)

Geeks were around for many years but had no name. People who had a great passion, obsession, interest in cards, games, comics, shows, movies, electronics, technology, education and a variety of other interests had no name until the 1934 when comics started bringing people together for a single franchise. As geeks evolved the term proved to be too broad since it marked as an umbrella term for many cultures which ended up developing and differentiating themselves so much geek did not do the label justice. In japan a group of people who speciallized in electronics, technology, comics, and games were called Akibakei. People started defining the type of geek to be Akibakei and sometimes use the terms interchangably. In the western states people still prefer to say the Geek Umbrella term since it is better known. If you were to describe a Akibakei to an American they would tell you its just a Geek.

Gastro-Akibakei Movement (1980-current)

The Akibakei or the Western Geeks of Japan derived from the Otaku urban culture scene. Those who gave up on social endeavors and social obligations ended up contributing to the gastro-akibakei movement. It was popular to go to maid cafes with expecting a fantasy world rather then view it as entertainment. Some maid cafes had changed their appearance and communications with the customer to create more of a realistic dinign experience then a escape. The gastro-akibakei movement was also seen in america with many people defining their lives based on game titles and skills when competing with other game players. The common foods in the gastro-akibakei movement were based on convenients. Many of the foods were microwavable, delivered, or bought via vending machine.
