Oden
What is Oden?
Oden has a variety of Fish Cakes, Vegetables, Tofu, Seafood, and some Meat.
In Japan...
People all over japan see Oden as a comforting snack which is often times served during the winter time, however you can usually find Oden at Oden stands during all the times of the year. When people think about eating oden they think of a heated Fish Cakes, Meats, and assorted Vegetables with heart warming soup.
To the Akibakei
In Akihabara people started to eat more Oden when there were Oden vending machines close to their hang outs. Some people who hang out in Akihabara can consume up to three of these cans per day.
Oden Types
Surimi Oden
Surimi means a slurry in translation. Surimi is pasted fish and is defined by its taste which is similar to imitation crab meat.
- Hanpen: white triangular shaped, soft, and mild tasting.
- Chikuwa: surimi and egg white. They are wrapped around a metal stick to be steamed, broiled, or fried.
- Kanikama: imitation crab meat or crab sticks.
- Gobomaki: burdock root wrapped in surimi.
- Bakudan: hardboiled egg wrapped in surimi. It is sometimes fried.
- Ikamaki: squid wrapped in surimi.
- Satsuma age: Fried fish cake.
- Kamaboko: fish cake
Tofu Oden
Tofu is made of soy and pressed into white blocks.
- Atsuage: deep fried tofu.
- Firm Tofu: a tofu which is still firm from the moisture. The texture is similar to meat.
- Aburaage: deep fried tofu pouches filled with either daikon, natto, or chicken.
Vegetable Oden
A mix of vegetables is added to vegetable oden while using a soy flavored dashi broth.
- Sliced Carrot: is a carrot that has been sliced and cooked.
- Sliced Daikon: is a daikon that has been sliced and cooked.
- Sliced Potato: is a potato that has been sliced and cooked.
- Cabbage Roll: a cabbage roll is cooked cabbage wrapped around beef.
- Shiitake: a tasty mushroom.
- Kabocha: deep fried tofu pouches which can be filled with natto, beef, or chicken.
- Konnyaku: is made up of the vegetable Konyak. It is a dark grey and firm consistency after its created into its jelly form. The translation means Devils Tongue.
