Origins
Etymology
The word "Shibuya" comes from the Japanese Tokyo district of Shibuya. The word "Kei" simply means system or type.
Shibuyakei had developed in the London Night scene which was cool for teens at the time. The scene was mainly in the Shibuya district in the 1980's. When journalists arrived trying to describe this idea of 1960s revival they started referring to it as Shibuyakei. When they had to describe music in the scene of Pizzacato Five and Flippers Guitar they also called it Shibuyakei. The name ultimately stuck from the press and no matter if you liked the name or didn't like the name the category was made
History
Shibuyakei first began to emerge in Shibuya district in Tokyo Japan. It was based around the London Night scene.
People inside the London Night seen were a large group of young fans who ended up not enjoying the mainstream japanese popular culture music and seen. Back then there was mostly idol groups and young boy rock bands. They were really into music and enjoyed the retro feel of music in the London Night scene. The musical acts which were listened to in the London Night scene didn't seem to share a specific style, but more of a guiding philosophy and fashion from the 1960's. The music style did follow similar ideas of mixing, matching, rearranging, deconstructing, and sampling or 1960's Popular music, French Ye-Ye, British and California soft rock. Some referred to it as western music created by japanese artists of Retro-Modern genre.
The group Pizzacato Five and Flipper's Guitar is credited with being the head icons for the paleo-shibuyakei movement in tokyo during the 1990's.
Pizzacato Five had built on ideas which were long forgotten of the French, British, and American styles of music. The groups sound put together a sound which would be called Shibuyakei. This label was also mentioned as a 1960's revival. This set the stage for future acts which would come in the later years. While Pizzacato Five was tapping into the past another group called Flipper's Guitar was put under the same category. Both groups proceeded with leading a sound of british, french, and american influences no has heard of before in tokyo.
The typical interests of Paleo-Shibuyakei is the music forms from the 1960's and preserving their sound with new content.
Shibuyakei basis is 1960's which is labelled as Retro. Trying to make it up to date is Modern, so that is why it is called a Retro-Modern urban culture.

Cuisine
Shibuyakei cuisine has developed over the years from the Geek Movement from Otaku who were interested in 1960s cooking. The style of cuisine emerged from a need to add food to be an additional identifier to Shibuyakei, so the styles origins come from a mix of inspirations from French, American, and British cuisine. Dishes such as cassarole, creamed greens, beef Bourguignon, and coq au vin are some of the foods which are known. Many of the recipes used from the 1960s were made famous from chef Julia Child.
